Course overview

 

This course will cover a minimum period of twenty (20) hours of instruction.  This curriculum must be adhered to when licensed as a Motorcycle Training School under the authority of the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations. 


Class Theory Module begins Friday evenings at 6 pm until 9 pm, then Practical Module resumes Saturday morning from 8 am to 5:30 pm and Sunday from 8 am to 5:30 pm, breaking 1 hr daily for lunch.  


Cost for the 20 hour course is $434.78 plus applicable taxes, and must be paid in full to secure your spot. 


ATTENTION CANCELLATION / NO SHOW REFUND

Cancellations require a one week minimum written notice for refund and is subject to a $75 administration and re booking fee. No show enrollments will not be refunded.



Theory Module

At a minimum the theory portion must include the following segments:


  • Orientation: Introductions and overview of what is expected. 
  • Basic rules of the road review. 
  • Motorcyclist responsibilities (being aware of his/her surroundings, defensive driving, using caution, visibility issues).
  • Overview of a motorcycle including, but not limited to, the parts of a motorcycle, how to mount a motorcycle, proper motorcycle maintenance (ie – tires and brakes), correct riding attire including gloves, jacket, eye wear, helmet, pants, high visibility clothing etc. 
  • Head checks and shoulder checks (when starting, stopping, turning). 
  • Overview of how a motorcycle works including, but not limited to, how to balance the motorcycle, how to steer a motorcycle, what the forces acting on the motorcycle are. 
  • Motorcycle riding techniques in residential, urban, rural and highway sites.
  • How to operate safely in difficult situations including, but not limited to, construction sites, crossing railroad tracks, passing over manhole covers, dirt and gravel, getting on and off ferries.
  • How to operate safely during an emergency situation (ie – avoiding animals, emergency braking, collision avoidance, passing/being passed by large trucks).
  • How to park a motorcycle safely. 
  • How to start and stop on a hill.
  • Lane positioning.
  • Target Fixation.
  • Communication with other motorists (hand signals).
  • When NOT to ride (impairment, drowsiness)
  • Driving in adverse weather conditions (rain, night time), on bridges (wooden, bailey), pavement re-grooving.
  • Group riding (staggered)


Practical Module

At a minimum the practical portion must include the following segments:


  • Preparing to ride a motorcycle.  Should include an overview of the location of controls, how things work, how to mount and dismount the motorcycle, how to start the motorcycle.
  • Overview of how a motorcycle works including, but not limited to, how to balance the motorcycle, how to steer a motorcycle, what the forces acting on the motorcycle are. 
  • Motorcycle control at low speeds.
  • Riding in a straight line
  • Figure 8’s
  • Slalom (counter steering)
  • Simulation of stop signs and entering into traffic
  • Motorcycle control at medium speeds
  • Higher speed manoeuvres (shifting etc)
  • How to operate in traffic – signalling, safe speeds, keeping safe distance, awareness of others, looking for potential danger, changing lanes etc.
  • Emergency techniques – emergency braking, collision avoidance etc.
  • Riding postures.
  • Downshifting.
  • Starting and stopping on a hill (may be limited due to location of training).
  • Pushing a motorcycle.
  • Picking up a motorcycle. 



    All applicants wishing to participate in the motorcycle training course must read and sign a medical warranty and waiver of liability before any participation on the program. Students under the age of maturity must have waivers signed by a parent or guardian on their  behalf  prior to entering the program .



East Coast Motorcycle Training reserves the right to remove any person or persons creating a hazard or disruption in the training program for the safety and quality of the training without refund or reimbursement.   Any person or persons found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be removed from any activity in the program and could be subject to a possible police escort and criminal prosecution.
